The Foot Locker U16 National Championships has wrapped up for another year, with Red Energy Arena once again playing host to the country's best emerging basketball talent across a week-long championship from July 4-12.
For the third consecutive year, Bendigo cemented its place as the home of Australia's premier U16 national pathway event, with States and Territories converging on the venue for what is, for many athletes, their first taste of national representation.
POOL PLAY AND THE ROAD TO FINALS
The opening days of the tournament saw teams battle through pool rounds across both the U16 Women's (Norma Connolly Trophy) and U16 Men's (Robert Young Shield) draws. Victoria's dominance was clear early, with Victoria Metro's men's side sitting undefeated across pool play, headlined by a staggering plus-223 point differential. On the women's side, Victoria Metro and Victoria Country both went unbeaten through their respective pools, setting the stage for what would ultimately become an all-Victorian Grand Final.
Individual standouts also emerged throughout the week. Tasmania's G. Boxhall led the Men's competition in both scoring (24.4 points per game) and assists (6.8 per game), while South Australia Metro's C. George and Tasmania's E. Boucher headlined the Women's scoring charts. Victoria Metro's dominance was reflected clearly in the statistical leaderboards, with multiple players from the side featuring prominently across the plus-minus and efficiency categories in both draws.
FINALS
As pool play gave way to classification and finals from July 10-12, the intensity ramped up considerably. The Final Eight bracket produced gripping semi-final action, with Victoria Metro's women's side and Victoria Country both fighting through tightly contested match-ups to book their spot in the Grand Final. In the Men's draw, Victoria Metro's unbeaten run continued, while Queensland South emerged as the form team of finals week to set up a blockbuster Gold Medal decider.
GOLD MEDAL SUNDAY
Sunday, July 12 delivered a fitting climax to the championship. In the Women's Gold Medal game, Victoria Country got the better of Victoria Metro 60-52 in an all-Victorian battle, claiming the Norma Connolly Trophy behind a balanced scoring effort from M. Beasley, M. Childs and M. Cox. South Australia Metro claimed bronze with a thrilling 66-64 win over Queensland South.
In the Men's Gold Medal game, Victoria Metro capped off a perfect, unbeaten campaign with a dominant 94-85 win over Queensland South, sealing the Robert Young Shield behind a 30-point performance from M. Adio. Western Australia Metro claimed bronze with a commanding 86-48 win over South Australia Metro.
