The 2026 Australian Schools Championships return to the Gold Coast, where some of the nation's best schools will battle it out to become Australian champions.
Last year’s edition saw 226 teams and more than 2,700 athletes compete. The tournament spans across the U20, U17 and U15 age categories with multiple divisions ensuring all ages and skill levels are represented.
Minister for the Environment and Tourism Andrew Powell MP said the championships were another example of Queensland cementing its reputation as Australia's events capital.
“The Australian School Championships will bring thousands of young athletes, families and supporters to the Gold Coast for a huge week of competition,” Minister Powell said.
“As the home of the holiday, Queensland is uniquely placed to turn major events into longer stays, giving visitors every reason to explore beyond the competition and experience more of our state.
“The Crisafulli Government is proud to back events that fill our hotels, support local businesses and showcase Queensland to the nation as the best place to play, stay and holiday.”
Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate believes the Australian Schools Championship is a fantastic platform for Australia's young stars to put their talents on display.
“The Australian Schools Championships gave all participants a platform to showcase their incredible skills,” Tate said.
“I know talent scouts have a keen eye on the event with budding Boomers and Opals stars in the mix.”
Gold Coast has played a valuable role in supporting and contributing to the ASC, with 2026 set to raise the bar once again on the premier event.
“Last year, this event contributed more than $10 million in direct and indirect benefit to our economy,” Tate said.
“Venue activation, support through sports science, logistics and promotion all form part of our approach to attracting major events like the Australian Schools Championships.
“I congratulate Basketball Australia for partnering with us on delivering a world-class tournament."
